Art In Motion offers one and two subject dance classes, workshops, dance camps, competition and outreach performance opportunities.
Some of our more popular classes are Contemporary, Street, Hip Hop, Ballet and Lyrical for ages 6 through teen and Creative Ballet and Storybook Ballet for ages 3-6 also fill fast. If you have never danced before, we recommend that you look for a beginning level class. Our main studio location is in Sparks and we have Satellite locations that have a variety of classes in the Reno/Sparks community. Special Competition and Outreach Performances Include:
Junior, Youth and Teen Performance Groups
We have three Performance Groups that represent Art In Motion within the community. To be a part of this awesome opportunity, students are required to audition and must be enrolled in one dance class to audition. Once picked to be in the Performance Group, dancers will have the opportunity to perform in competition, outreach projects within Reno area and multiple dances at recitals. Performance Group dancers can work with outside guest artists and have more competition and performing opportunities. Since 2008, Our Performance Groups have already represented Art In Motion in special events like Spark’s Hometowne Christmas Parade, Spark's Pumpkin Palooza, Sparks Crossing Pumpkin Festival, Grace Church Harvest Festival, City of Sparks Oktoberfest, Andelin Farms Halloween Outreach, SSHS Santa Breakfast, convalescent and hospital Christmas Dancolings, Artown Events, Washoe County Lazy 5 Music Festivals and Reno’s Hot August Nights.
Ages 3-6 Dance Classes Include:
Broadway Babies class Ages 5-9
Broadway Babies will introduce young dancers to musical theater! Princesses, props and youthful musical theater dances in shows such as Annie, The Lion King, Aladdin will open young dancers to the world of musical theater. Join in the magical fun! This class is an introduction to musical theater; all dance styles appropriate to the shows picked will be taught. This can include ballet and jazz subjects and singing. Loose fitting clothes and jazz shoes required.
Storybook Ballet Ages 2-5
Princesses, magical animals, mermaids and more come to life in this class! Come be enchanted as stories are read and come to life through dancing. Students will learn basic ballet steps along with dancing that corresponds with the fairy-tale story. Props and some costumes will be supplied. Tights, leotard, and ballet shoes are required.
Hippity Hop (Hip Hop Dance)
Great first dance class for girls or boys ages 3-6 who can�t stop moving! Dance movements will mix hip hop, tumbling and creative moves to inspire young dancers. Music style is age appropriate. Loose fitting clothes and jazz or black ballet shoes required.
Students age 3-6 will learn basic ballet steps along with creative movement by using imagery, props and fun dances. Tights, leotard, and ballet shoes are required. We also offer a Pre-Ballet I class starting at age 6.
One Subject Dance Class Include:
Ballet I, II and III
Dancers will learn Cecchetti based exercises. Instructor will also explain the exercises in terms that they will be able to understand. Appropriate ballet attire of a leotard, tights and either dance shorts or a skirt and ballet shoes are required. Ballet III ~ First class is an audition class. Must have four or more years previous training. Intermediate and advanced classical ballet terminology used. Can wear pointe shoes if applicable. Students have recital opportunities.
En Pointe Class is a beginner class working on dancers' weight load and strength throughout the foot. Must be 12 years old or older and have three or more years of ballet training. Dancer will work on stretching and conditioning as well as body weight transfers to be fully extended en pointe. Pointe work is performed while wearing pointe shoes and without. Must have shoes fitted at Judy's, shoes must be sewn and ready to wear for the first class. All dancers are required to be in Ballet II or III class to participate.
Dancers explore basic technique and skills for contemporary dance. Dance choreography can be abstract, emotional or tell a story. A warm up with stretching and conditioning will be taught. Students have recital opportunities. Appropriate dance clothing and lyrical shoes are required.
Broadway Jazz Class
Broadway Jazz Class is a great way to dive into the world of theater dance. Here you will learn about the greats, such as Bob Fosse, Matthew Bourne, Garth Fagan, Jerome Robbins, Agnes De Mille, Michael Kid, Savion Glover, and many more. This class gets back to the roots of jazz dance. Using jazz technique we will highlight choreography and styles from Musicals such as The Lion King, Chicago, and Mary Poppins. This class also features moves from more recent works like High School Musical, Hamilton, and Wicked. We focus on technical steps like the grapevine, axels, and the shim sham. Class has performance opportunities. Loose fitting clothes and jazz shoes required.
Tumbling and Tricks Class
Improve your abilities to be a great dancer! Students will learn the basics of tumbling and acrobatics. Great for beginning and intermediate gymnasts. Class will work on different levels of acrobatics, dance tricks, turns, jumps and partnering. Come in loose fitting clothes and hair pulled back.
Hip Hop Dance
Start your creativity and learn some street dancing with technical training. Class will have a warm-up, turn combinations, across the floor sequences and center dance combinations. Appropriate dance clothing and jazz shoes are required.
Musical Theater class will strengthen and combine vocal ability, acting and dance technique into a triple threat performance. Class will be taught by two instructors; starting with a a group monthly voice lesson and then teaching technical dance and acting training with choreography. Class has performance opportunities. Loose fitting clothes and jazz shoes required.
Learn the classics! Jazz dance incorporates many genres through the ages and touches on our American culture. Students will learn different styles of classical jazz technique along with stretching and conditioning. Loose fitting clothes and jazz shoes required.
Street or Urban Hip Hop
In this relaxed style of Hip Hop, dancers will learn more about street dancing and popping and locking forms of Hip Hop dancing. This class is perfect for any gender. It is a lot of fun and anyone can learn it. Loose fitting dance clothing, no jeans and black Converse "Chuck Taylor" style shoes are required.
Get a total body workout that enhances strength, cardiovascular conditioning, balance and flexibility. This class focuses on connecting breath with Yoga flow. These traditional and non-traditional techniques giving the participant a fun experience that works the muscles and clears the mind of stress. Loose fitting clothes and yoga mat required.
Two Subject Dance Classes Include:
Ballet/Jazz or Lyrical/Jazz or Lyrical/Contemporary and Lyrical/Jazz
Combined classes or Combo classes will have two subjects that rotate weekly. Upper levels will require an audition for placement.
July and August Summer Camps:
July 15-19 Ages 5-7 Princess Camp
Send your little princess to a far away dance floor to learn how to dance like a princess, talk like a princess, sing like a princess and use all her princess like manners at Princess Camp! Each day we celebrate a different princess and build the curriculum around that princess. Leotard, tights and pink ballet shoes required.
August 6-8 Ages 10 and up Performance Group Prep Camp from 1-4 p.m. with Ms. Kim
Auditions are a fact of life for the dancer. They are your chance to show your skills and talent to a panel of judges. Whether you are auditioning for our dance team, college, a dance company, or an entertainment position, they can feel overwhelming to prepare for. Our Performance Group Prep Camp will give the best guidance in preparation to audition, teach the you different styles of dance and help you understand the process for auditioning!
